The Educational and Professional Program B2.04 ‘Costume Design’ is implemented at the first (Bachelor’s) level of higher education. According to the results of the accreditation review conducted by the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance (НАЗЯВО, Ukrainian), the program ‘Clothing Design (footwear)’ with an applied focus has been introduced within the scope of the ‘Design’ specialty since 2021.
The goal of the program is to develop both general and professional competencies of future costume designers at the Bachelor’s level. Students master traditional shapes and cut-outs, as well as hand-crafted decorative techniques.
Creation of contemporary original designer products based on a deep understanding of Ukrainian folk traditions, particularly those of the Hutsul region, is at the core of the program.
Its key features are the formation of a creative educational environment in the field of culture and art, development of effective design practices, support of individual and collective identity, and implementation of cultural policy focused on national traditions, Ukrainian mentality and authenticity. The program takes into consideration students’ professional needs, adhering to the principles of academic freedom, and creates conditions for building an individual educational path. It also involves practitioners in the educational process and is labour market demand-oriented, taking into account the experience of both domestic and foreign higher education institutions.
An additional distinctive feature of the program is the opportunity for students to shape their own educational path while acquiring specialized knowledge and practical skills in designing garments for sacred purposes.
During their studies, students explore traditional forms and cut-outs of folk clothing and gain in-depth knowledge of hand-crafted decorative techniques, artistic embroidery, in particular. At the same time, modern training includes the use of advanced digital technologies: creating ornament designs using machine embroidery software, developing garment designs, making basic and creative French curves, and producing garments using modern domestic and industrial sewing equipment.
